In my line of business (I’m a lecturer at U.C. Davis), I write a lot of letters of recommendation, but this one has got to one of the best, most fun, and most eagerly written. Total Horsemanship Certification Program
Total Horsemanship Certification Program is an all encompassing, comprehensive program, designed for those with a passion for horses and a desire to learn. The program will expand your equine knowledge on every level and provides a professional approach to ultimately obtaining the means for you to accomplish your goals and dreams.
The Total Horsemanship Certification Program is unique in that you will learn about everything to do with horses; while training methods is a majority of the program it is not limited to just training techniques. You will be exposed to many, many things– you will experience field trips like, Horsexpos, clinics, a behind the scenes look at UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Wild Mustang Rescue, Horse Shows, Camping Trips, Trail Trials, Endurance Rides, Breeding Facility Tour, etc.
“Total Horsemanship‟ is an approach to teaching you to be the authority on everything equine– a trainer well informed. There is no program anywhere that compares.
Christa is an extraordinary communicator and instructor. You will hang on her every word, enjoy her many, many stories or antidotes (and be entertained) and come away with a brain-full. Christa provides individualized attention geared to each student’s personality and learning style in a manner that will maximize learning.

Certification Program Details
- Tuition is $12,000.
- $2,000.00 deposit (applied to October session), $2,000.00 due the first of each month. 5% discount if paid in full at the start of the program.
- The program is 20 weeks in duration, May 1– October 29, with 3 weeks on and 1 week off.
- Each week runs Monday thru Friday.
- 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Field Trip days will be on a separate schedule (to be announced).
- Each student must provide 1 broke or green-broke horse and each student will pick out their own wild mustang, as their project horse, on the Wild Mustang Field Trip.
- Class size limited to 10 students.
- Stalls are provided at the cost of $15.00 per day, per horse (includes cleaning only, feed and shavings are student's responsibility).
- Feeding and care is student’s responsibility.
- Lodging is student’s responsibility and expense. RV or trailer apace is available at the facility at the rate of $15 per day and there is a local camp ground close-by.
- Participants must be 18 years or older.
- Cost of curriculum is not included in tuition.
About Christa Petrillo
Christa believes strongly in building a good solid foundation in people concerning their horsemanship and life with horses. “A building is only as good as the foundation it is built upon. If you have an inadequate foundation the building is going to come apart over time. So it is with our horses and with our understanding of horses.” Christa guides her clients through the “construction zone” of education to successful horsemanship. She helps set people “on the road to success.
Christa calls her business "Total Horsemanship" because it encompasses so much more than horse training. Total Horsemanship involves the total aspect of horse ownership, including topics such as acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal remedies, nutrition, foal handling, stallion handling and management, rehabilitation, horse husbandry, ranch management, grooming, saddle fitting, and more. The list goes on and on. She teaches these subjects and students come away with more than they ever expected. It's useful information that enriches their total equine experience.
It should come as no surprise that Christa takes a comprehensive approach to horsemanship – her personal experience covers many equestrian disciplines. From her early childhood at a premier A-circuit hunter/jumper barn, through childhood and teen years riding and showing Arabians and Quarter Horses, plus everything from trail rides to dressage shows to parades, Christa and the wonderful variety of the equine world were well acquainted.
Christa Petrillo is a John and Josh Lyons Certified Trainer. Many of his methods and training theory are incorporated with her own methods and theory which come as a result of her varied experiences.
